报告摘要:
Originally proposed as a theoretical construct in 1964 to explain how an underlying symmetry in a Lagrangian may be hidden in the ground state, the Higgs boson soon became the key stone of the Standard Model in the particle physics. In the years since the Standard Model has been remarkably successful in explaining experimental results and yet, the Higgs boson itself has remained elusive until the advent of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The discovery at the LHC of the Higgs boson in 2012 has prompted the awarding of the 2013 Nobel prize to Francois Englert and Peter Higgs. In this talk I will briefly review the construction of the Higgs model, the history of the idea and its importance in physics. I will then discuss how the Higgs boson was discovered by the experiments at the LHC. I will finish off by discussing the future prospect of the particle physics in the post Higgs discovery era.
报告人简介:
Dr. Chen is currently an associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Iowa State University. He received his PhD in physics from the University of Pennsylvania in 2003 working on the CDF experiment at the Fermilab. He then joined the University of Maryland as a postdoc and carried out his research on the CP violation at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Since 2009, Dr. Chen has been a faculty at Iowa State University. His current research focus is the ATLAS experiment, one of the two experiments that discovered the Higgs Boson in 2012.
